Posted this on the GameToons wiki but felt like it belongs here too, all of their character development takes place during this series.
First off, for the people who don’t know what BPD is, Borderline Personality Disorder is a cluster B personality disorder that can affect the way an individual interacts with other people and with themselves. Sufferers tend to feel very strongly about relationships, positively and negatively. This often results in erratic, obsessive, attention seeking behaviour and unhealthy relationships. See how I’ve just finished describing Captain?
Quick warning before you decide to take a look that I am extremely autistic about this, I know, I know, it’s really hard to tell.
In episode 4 of Among Us Logic, Captain’s obsession with Player begins. Captain is completely infatuated with Player. He spends almost every other episode trying to get Player’s attention, wanting to be his best friend, his only friend even. He wants the kind of importance that overrides everyone else’s needs in Player’s life.
Player obviously, is extremely uncomfortable. At first he was just fine with being acquainted, but now it’s overwhelming. He had only known him for a few days after all! Player shows his frustration by ignoring Captain, his plans to hang out and his messages. He even expresses it through wanting to kill him in lobbies. Yeah, it’s played off for the lolz (it’s not like Player has a completely healthy relationship with anybody really) but to be fair, that’s just how FPs can work.
A Favourite Person is a BPD’s go to person, someone they feel like they can rely on for support and someone they adore so much it feels like they couldn’t live without them. Without them, they’re lost, empty and resentful. Quoted from verywellmind.com “a person with BPD may conjure a close connection with a favorite person who becomes the object of their attention, adoration, and sometimes even indifference.” Captain may see Player as his FP, but Player in typical Player fashion is pretty lacklustre when it comes to keeping his true emotions hidden for convenience. Not necessarily a bad thing, but when it comes to such an emotionally charged relationship like their one is, the mistreatment eventually leads to splitting, and splitting eventually leads to episode 15 (best episode ever we love it when the nice guy finally snaps.)
A few people in the community can mix up Captain’s strange behaviour for him having a crush on Player, but I really don’t think this is the case. The obsession you can have with your FP can make you FEEL like you love them in a romantic way because you can see no wrong in them, they are perfect in your eyes and you want to do anything you can to make them happy. I understand why someone would feel confused, an individual with BPD may even confuse those feelings with romance and attraction sometimes if they aren’t diagnosed or aware of their condition. This can obviously lead to even more difficulty navigating it, especially when your FP doesn’t like you very much.
So is Player a victim of Captain’s instability? I will admit I am a little biased here. I really like Player, but I can’t completely defend him here, he isn’t exactly innocent himself. He is well aware of how unstable and lonely Captain is and takes full advantage of it. This is especially noticeable in episode 12, where he relies on Captain backing him up purely because he loves him. He knows how desperate he is and clings to it. As much as I like Player, there’s a reason everyone in the lobby aren’t exactly his biggest fans. That’s why we love him though, he’s an unfiltered silly billy with a heart of stone.
Captain may not come across as insecure at first, as he’s usually found joking around with the crew, but pay close attention and the cracks can start to show. He considers everyone around him a friend when the unfortunate reality is, not everyone reciprocates this friendship. Captain retreats into his role as the captain of the crew, one of which nobody takes seriously, feeling lost when told to temporarily change his name for a game and being treated as an easily disposable part of the crew. Simply put, Captain is essentially the funny friend nobody takes seriously at all.
Even after all that Captain still shows he very much still cares about Player, but unfortunately we don’t get to explore more of their relationship as of late as GameToons focuses on other media. Good for them, but we need more toxic Player and Captain interactions GameToons, come on! Their deep rooted hatred for each other while trying to save face is hilarious, definitely one of the most interesting pairings they have. Was Captain being this BPD-coded intentional?
Thank you for reading my insane rambling.
